Chicago
nicknamed as the Windy City, not because of its unpredictable weather but
to point out the loudmouthed politicians of the 1880’s by a New York
newspaper, is the third most populated city in United States. |

The
city lies along the Midwestern state of Illinois. In fact, the location
where Chicago now stands was referred to as the ‘Checagou’ which
means wild onion or garlic, by the indigenous inhabitants Potowatomi,
and hence derived its unique name from this. This city under the state of Illinois was formed around 1830’s
and is now ranked as one of the top cities in the world. In fact, the
worlds first ever skyscraper ‘The Home Insurance Building’ was
raised in Chicago.
Known
for its ethnic diversity, the city has a population around 2,856,244
according to 2004 census, and it’s still growing. The city of Chicago
is also known as the leader of the Midwest in architecture, financial
and transportation center. In fact some of the most famous symbols come
from Chicago, whether it be politics, sports or cuisines.
Presently
the city of Chicago is occupied largely by Caucasians, followed by Afro
American, Hispanic and then Asians who are all referred to familiarly as
a Chicagoans.
Other than its popularity of intermixture and owner of several
nicknames like Second city and Chi town, Chicago is also well known for
its extreme climate. Winters can be harshly cold while in summer, can
experience extreme heat waves. Thus those residing near Lake Michigan
are better off, but the close proximity of the shore results in
snowfall.
Besides, Chicago is the largest city of Cook county covering a total area of 606.1 km˛. Here the government is headed by the mayor who is regarded as the chief executive; Richard M. Daley is the present mayor. Another worth mentioning trend we notice about Chicago is the popularity of democrats. Studies reveal that except for one alderman, all are democrats. |
